Good but...
I am happy with the overall performance of the headlight beams. Since I do a lot of night driving in rural areas having a good high beam is very important to me. What is lacking is the lifespan of this bulb. After trying most of the major bulbs on the market I would say the lifespan of this bulb is average... which is not good. If you use your high beams like I do, a 3-6 mo lifespan is all I get. I assume that part of the problem is in the overall design of the headlight unit itself as heat buildup is a killer along with the turning off and on repetition. I would like to see a better bulb developed.
The light is bright, but it has limits due to the law of physics.
Well I read a few reviews and seems like I can only expect them to last 12 months the most. Which to me is not a surprice. I know they are some unhappy customers there, but if you truely understand the science and physics of these technology, u will know why is that way.
I have 2 cars, one is the new 07 Acura TL with straight out Bi-xenon HID light and the other is the old 99 Mazda Protege uses Halogen light. They are very different.
Traditionally, Halogen headlights uses filament that can only last as long as the filament can withstand heat up and cool down cycles. In order for the light to be brighter and whiter, you have to raise the temperature of the filament significantly and thus shorten it life expentancy significantly. Even if presurized tube inside can only do so much to lengthen its lifespan. The filament can only withstand so much heat b4 it gives up.
As for the HID light, the light tube is filled with both gas and metal salts. The gas facilitates the arc's initial strike. Once the arc is started, it heats and evaporates the metal salts forming a plasma, which greatly increases the intensity of light produced by the arc and reduces its power consumption. So typically HID light require a lot lesser power, but also requires an expensive conversion kit to convert the higher voltage provided from the car battery to lower voltage for the HID light. Thit kit alone can cost u $1000-$2000 easily to install onto your older car if u don't have HID light. Won't be a problem for some newer car. HID light due to lower power consumption will last twice to 3 times as long as the traditional OEM Halogen light and lower fuel consumption for car as well.
Here is the comparation for the older car, if you install conversion kit lets say $1200, and get HID bulb that last twice as long as the OEM Halogen light (2000 hrs typically versus 1000 hrs). Or stick with this bulb which is near the brightness of the HID, and keep changing every 12 months. This light probably only last like 200-300 hrs (for estimate sake). Buying this light 10 times still way cheaper..like hundreds of dollars cheaper than the HID light conversion kit alone, not to mention the HID Bulb yet. So really, I m not complaining. You are talking about near HID performance light that only cost a fraction of the price of entire HID kit through the life span of your car.
OK if you can afford to keep replacing them!
It would be nice if they put the "not expected to last 12 months" label on the package! Had 2 sets on my Accord (low beams only), both lasted 9-10 months. I don't have driving lights and do minimal night driving. My factory lamps lasted 5 years, actually only one blew and I just put the other back in. Will stick with OEM.
